Design Rule: Navigation is the same for everyone. Access is managed by enable/disable + explain. This removes "multiple apps" perception.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Visibility: Items can be visible-enabled, visible-disabled (with tooltip), or hidden only if absolutely necessary (prefer disabled + explain)

Context: Navigation doesn't change by role—permissions and feature availability change

Discoverability: Disabled features show explanations via "Why am I seeing this?" pattern

Responsive Design: All specs work on desktop (with left sidebar), tablet (collapsible), and mobile (drawer-based navigation)

IMPLEMENTATION NOTES

  • Mobile First: Design drawer-based nav for mobile, extend to sidebar on larger screens
  • Accessibility: All interactive elements must have clear labels and keyboard navigation
  • Consistency: Use the same mode color/badge throughout the app
  • Loading States: Show skeleton loaders while workspaces/documents are loading
  • Empty States: Clear messaging when no workspaces, tasks, or alerts exist
